They are brighter than average, but the white mode is less white than the others. The power cord is longer than average, which is a plus. It might not seem like a big deal, but when you want to take advantage of the quick and discreet installation of these products, you don't want to spoil the look by adding a suitable extension cable.
These lights appear to come from the same manufacturer as the Govee lights. The box they came in says "Minger" on the outside. However, on the inside, all the instructional materials say "Govee". The Minger light components we have don't say Govee or Minger on them. Very few light strip components (each consists of strip, power cord, control box, app, remote control) of any brand have markings written on them. We tested the brightness of four of the individual LEDs in each strip with a digital light meter. They were all tested at the same time, against a bright background and in a dimly lit room. The L8Star turned it on at 660 Lux and matched the beat of the music to the flashing lights (via a smartphone app). You can play music through the app or use your smartphone's microphone to follow the beat, and the app will make the lights flash and flash to the beat.
The standalone remote is small and limited in what it can do, especially compared to app controls. The instructions are poorly translated and don't inspire much confidence. We were able to get everything to work, mainly thanks to the intuitive app. It is not complicated to install and assemble strip lights, but the instructions did not help much. At 55 inches, the supplied cable is slightly below average and shorter than many installations require.

Control is multifaceted. Many want the accent lighting provided by LED strips to come in different colors with adjustable brightness and change/flicker rates. You want to control these various modes in a clear and direct way. In our tests, we found that controlling your lights with an app was easier and more functional than any of the supplied remotes. A wide range of brightness settings is really nice, and sometimes you don't want your accent light to have any color. Colored LED strips can be set to "white" mode, but not all white modes are created equal. Whiter white modes are better. While not a crucial component for most people, we like light strips with the ability to sync to music. For home security purposes, we also like being able to remotely turn our lights on and off via Wi-Fi.
Our favorite products, unsurprisingly, had the most simplified controls. the best scoreLED NexLuxlight has a smart app that works with WiFi from anywhere in the world. Music sync works fine; white mode isn't the best, but it's close. The darkest setting is barely brighter than a candle, while the brightest is above average - there's plenty of brightness range in the NexLux. Another prominent artist, theL8Star Smart LED, it is quite similar to NexLux. The L8Star has an app, but it's not connected to Wi-Fi, which compromises usability a bit.
While app control is ideal, having the option to use your lights without WiFi or needing to download an app is a welcome feature. EITHERVilla Pangton LEDStrip Lights offer the most exceptional control of any non-app-enabled light strip. There are ten levels of brightness and the white mode is one of the brightest.
Shine
The brightness of the lights may be important, but it's probably not the most important thing. Most installation scenarios are to accent and enhance existing lighting. However, there are situations where you may want maximum illumination from your trailing lights. We found noticeable (although not significant) variation in the brightness of the strip lights tested. The brightest will do some tasks that only the darkest could not.
We tested the gloss in two ways. We conducted a light meter test (using a smartphone light meter app) confirmed by a subjective side-by-side comparison. In only two cases, when the lights were very, very close together on the light meter, did our "blind" subjective tester have trouble classifying them in a way that matched the light meter results.
The strips themselves came in two different main forms: coated and uncoated. They look the same, except the coated versions feature a bead of clear rubber material that covers the LEDs and associated wiring while reinforcing the backing tape. Uncoated types have their own open LEDs. At first, we thought uncoated LEDs would be brighter without the interference of a cover. Our tests found just the opposite. The two coated products (NexluxmiDayBetter Wi-Fi) are among the three brightest in our test.

Ease of use/installation
Installing and configuring these products taught us a few key facts about what makes quality LED strips and what doesn't. Rubberized products are easier to work with and a good "flat" double sided tape is important. Foam-filled double-sided tape doesn't work either. The longer the power cord, the better. Bad or poorly translated instructions only complicate things, especially if there is an app to configure.
OL8 Starit worked great but was a pain to use and set up. The instructions were hard to decipher, and the foam-filled tape was less sticky than others and left residue on furniture, cabinets, and trim. the gummedDayBetter Wi-FimiNexLuxthey were easier to use and work with than the uncoated versions. The uncoated versions have ridges that can catch on things during installation and feel much more vulnerable and brittle to install and use.
Brand
In researching and testing these products, we noticed significant similarities between the brands. We tried a variety of products from different brands. Each product is made up of four main components, including the strip itself, a controller, a power cord, and a remote control. Some also have an app.
In the entire set, only one of the remotes shows the stamped mark. The rest of the fleet uses one of two different sizes of remote controls, both with similar layout cues, fonts, and button layouts. Each remote could control at least some aspect of another light strip. For example, the off button on a remote control can change the color of the strip to a different brand. The two strips from the same brand also used different remote controls.
The light strips look identical in most of the test selection. Even rubber coated strips look the same as uncoated strips, except for the clear rubber coating. The etched markings on the power cords are quite unique from product to product and very rarely match the markings on the light strip itself. The "dongle" wired controller receives the signal from the app or remote control and manages the light colours, flicker and brightness. Both Wi-Fi-ready products use the exact same controller, while the Minger LED light strip comes with Govee-branded instructions.
We list all these details to point out that there seems to be crossover between the brands. We also look at different equipment on different models of the same brand. We can't be sure, but given cross-pollination, we have to assume that some of these components may change in different production runs of the same make and model. We did notice small performance differences between what we tested, but no big variances. None of these products is very expensive, and to keep costs down, we expect the market, supplies, and quality control to fluctuate significantly. It seems quite likely that two or more brands are using the same components.
